Seeing and Writing

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust

What does seeing have to do with writing?

Seeing is an effortless, reflexive activity. If you ask someone to ‘take a look’, the time and effort required is minimal. This is not the case with writing, which requires careful and often tiring thought.

This workshop will demonstrate how seeing and writing are, in fact, closely related. We will practice the process of making observations and drawing inferences of everyday objects, familiar places, and people. By acknowledging the acts of visual perception that we preform every day, we can become more aware of this very powerful and highly developed skill. You will learn how ‘seeing’ more carefully can lead to clearer, easier, and more thoughtful writing.
